My Approach to Making a Low-Budget Film

Conquering the art of cinema is a dream for many people. But many people around the world aspire to make that dream come true. It was the same in the past. It is the same today. It will be the same in the future.

Cinema is such an exciting art. But only a few people are able to grasp this art and move forward. The reason for this is the high cost of producing a film.

Breaking the Hollywood Myth

The flag bearers of cinema in the current world are in America. Newcomers to the world of cinema think that only these great filmmakers can make a film. But that is a wrong conclusion.

The Power of Independent Cinema

Opportunities abound in independent cinema. Independent cinema is proof enough that a powerful film can be made at a very low cost. The beautiful films produced in independent cinema are not produced in the upper echelons of Hollywood cinema.

Challenges in Independent Filmmaking

The films produced in independent cinema are the simplest ones. The reason for this is that many creations are made at very low cost. They cannot use expensive cameras. They cannot use expensive actors. They cannot get expensive technicians. It is also difficult to find a good market for those films.

But many independent filmmakers try to overcome this situation. And they also achieve success.

Finding Your Own Voice

The first thing an independent filmmaker should do to avoid being underestimated as an independent filmmaker is to avoid imitating the powerful filmmakers in the world. If you do so, you will never be able to showcase your creation.

The Foundation: Story

The basic ingredient of a film is the story. No matter what kind of story it is, it must have strength. If you find a story of this kind, you have laid the foundation for the success of the film.

Essential Equipment

After that, you have to decide what equipment to find to make the film. The basic equipment needed to shoot a film is the camera. An expensive camera is not required for this. The Sony FX 3 camera was used to produce my film. In addition, several lenses are required. For this, we used a few very inexpensive Samyang lenses. In fact, we only needed 50mm, 85mm and 135mm lenses. In addition, the Great Joy anamorphic adapter was used.

Sound Management

I never trust on-location sound recording. In today’s society and urban life, there is no opportunity to do so. Therefore, I think that dubbing should be done for the sound management of the film. Therefore, the on-location sound recording of our film was done only for reference.

Lighting Approach

We used very little artificial light. That is, two lights. Both of them have a power of 1800 watts. We used natural light whenever possible.

The Importance of Aspect Ratio

Also, when creating a film, it is very important to consider its aspect ratio. This is an essential factor in obtaining an artistic shape for the film. I think that a 21.9 aspect ratio is the most suitable for a film.

Anamorphic Adaptation

I used the Great Joy anamorphic adaptor for our film. It contributed very well to the creation. Most films made in the world do not use anamorphic lenses. The main reason for this is that these devices are expensive. However, you can create a good image by using an anamorphic adaptor with a spherical lens. However, many independent filmmakers do not do this. Instead, they effortlessly crop the frame. Many filmmakers choose this because it is a low-cost and easy method. But if you make a film with anamorphic lenses, the cinematic value increases.

Conclusion

If you try to make a film based on the above-mentioned points, you can do it at a very low cost. There are also other points to explain to you. I hope to talk about them in future articles.
